Personal background
Hi, my name is Chris. I live in Melbourne, Australia. I decided that my current screensaver was rather boring and I thought that this one would actually do something productive at the same time.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think Carl Sagan once said that in our galaxy alone, even if one in every million solar systems had a planet capable of supporting life and if only one in every million of those actually had life and if only one in every million of those had intelligent life, there would be 1000 planets with intelligent life. Given those statistics, it would seem that there must be life elsewhere. But because the universe is so vast and we have only recently been able to listen to the stars, it will take some time. Eventually we will find it, or they will find us.

Discovering ET life may benefit us via new technology. It may even make us all a lot closer. Humans tend to identify only when presented with something outside the group we are trying to identify with. For example, I would identify as a Melbournian when meeting people from Sydney and identify as an Australian when meeting someone from the US. When we eventually interact with ET life, perhaps we will start identifying as Earthlings and start cooperating a bit better. Of course, the rush of new technology can be a double edged sword. The culture shock has the potential to be quite devastating. But, I believe the meeting will happen and we just have to be prepared for whatever consequences eventuate.
