Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that it would be arrogant of humans to assume that it is unlikely that extra-terrestrial life has not formed on other planets in the universe. However it would take us many, many years before we could make any sort of communication (providing we don't find a loop hole in the laws of physics i.e. faster then light travel and the like). We may find traces of what was (and maybe continues to be) ET Life, and knowing us humans it would be subject to mass debate and speculation. ET's are generally an accepted phenomena now, although they were not years ago, and I believe that we as a people, would be able to accept (eventually) that we are not alone in the universe. I also believe however, it would be an unwise move to alert ET's to our presence just yet. We lack the technological capability and the political readiness to cope with an meeting or war (unlikely, but possible) with ET's, I feel we should definitely observe, but stay the urge to light that big intergalactic bonfire alerting any observing being to our existence. Why do I run SETI@home? Because I would like to think in some small (perhaps insignificant) way, I assisted the Human Race in its hunger to search for the truth. I enjoy reading the principals of theoretical physics although I lack the mathematical ability to even hope to study the field and I guess I just like to be apart of the action... Well, that’s my spiel, have a good one!
