Personal background
Hiya Im 34 married guy with 2.5 children (yes i have a .5 as he doesnt live with me). My 6 year old (middle)is the one that keeps me going with SETI as he gets so excited about "looking for alien messages".
As for me, well I'm still a little boy inside and love to climb, fly (power) kites, surf the net and if my wife would let me, ride bikes (the motorised kind!).
Im a Nurse Specialist in the field of addictions and live down in sunny zummerzet (yes despite it being the "sticks" and what the government would like to think theres just as big a drugs problem here as in the cities).
Running the command line client now as i have managed to figure it out! And it seems to run through units a lot quicker, although saying that I'm sure its using more system ram, but I may be wrong.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Of course extraterrestial life exists!!!! With billions upon billions of stars and planets in the known universe (and who really knows if this is the only universe, or even if its actually just a small part of another bigger universe or perhaps even its just a part of something even stranger?!?) Why do we humans insist on seeing everything from our perspective and ignore all other possibilities. I would think that other life will discover us long before we are able to discover them (if it hasnt happened already) and who knows what the benefits/dangers will be, i just hope they are not too much like us, otherwise we are probably doomed (after all we do a pretty good job of destroying each other!)

2. Should we transmit a beacon?? Well only if it says "Keep clear! immature and violent species live here! Enter at your peril!"

3. As I say above I run SETI@home because my little boy thinks its great to look for alien messages! lol. But I ran it first off to see really what it was all about and then got hooked. Until I managed to get a much faster pc, it was a little boring for me really, as it took so long to crunch through the data. But now I know more about it and how it can run faster (new pc does help)it feels nice to be able to help in some nondestructive science.
I think the project is great and a shame that the U.S. Govt is happy to spend billions on bombs and causing death but pulled all the funding from this project.
The only suggestion I have at this time, is to add a bit more "nonacademic" info onto the site, like star maps and maps of where possible signals have been "seen", so that the children among us (no not me my son!) can follow what is going on too.
