Personal background
I am 35 years of age, married, no children. I dabble in astronomy, physics, philosophy, theology and build the occasional model.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think life exists somewhere in the Universe. It may be only microscopic life, but life has to exist. The more we learn about the universe the more it appears to have a working order. Granted Albert Einstein summed it up when he said, "We don't know one tenth of one percent of anything." we are learning more and more each year. We've discovered over 100 extra solar planets, new theories concerning solar systems, comets and galaxies as a whole demonstrate that we haven't even begun to put the proverbial scratch in the surface of knowledge. We have so much more to learn and many more humbling experiences to encounter before we even begin to truly understand our place in the Universe.

We should make our presence known. We don't need to get fancy and try to show off, keep it simply, transmit a few prime numbers, just anything that simply and effectively shows that we have evolved beyond stone tools. We want to make contact, not get into an IQ pissing contest with ET. However our primary focus needs to be on discovery and obtaining new knowledge. We need to understand ourselves and our surroundings before we can begin to understand a completely alien culture.

As to why I run SETI@home; I leave my computers one all the time, SETI may as well get use out of them while I'm not. Extraterrestrial intelligence is a question that humankind must answer. I do get some ribbing from Christians from time to time, but I tell them the reason I run SETI is to prove that there is absolutely no intelligent life anywhere in the Universe. I love to see at the puzzled look on their face after the thought sinks in.
