| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Do I believe extraterrestrial life exists?
That is a question that I have not come to a conclusion on one way or the other. I believe that is is highly likeley that there is life, I also believe that if it were discovered by a governement agency that it would be a long time before any body knew about it, but the scientist in me says that lack of evidence is not evidence of lack.
Should humans send a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?
I don't know, there are certain dangers involved with sending beacons, such as the purposes for the "Prime Directive" from Star Trek, you don't know where it would land or what affect it would have on another culture who recieved it. So the information would need to be someone generic, kind of a here is our phone number give us a call type of beacon.
Why do I run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?
I run Seti@home because of my interest in the unknown, because I am offended by people who think that evidence of aliens disproves G-d, and so I hope that I get to discover the signal, and because I think that it is pretty cool to be involved (even in a passive way) in one of the largest computer projects ever put together. I believe that this is a great project, and I hope that one day SETI does discover the evidence that it is looking for, and I can only hope that I can be part of that discovery. I believe that it would be a great day for all mankind. |
