Profile: [PCD] DOA

Personal background
The name's Gerald, I'm 27 year old and work as hardware editor for PC DIREKT, a german computer print magazine which is part of VNU Business Publications.
I'm handling system, CPU and cooler reviews and add additional stuff as I see fit.

I initially found S@H when I was looking for another benchmarking tool and so became "addicted" in August 2001. After some test runs it became a 24/7 job for all of my hardware, both at work and at home. Currently there are four machines at home and about 20 to 30 here at work crunching right away.
Why? Look down... ;)

The fine part of my job is, that I have access to the newest hardware, often before it hits the market. Thus I was able to achieve a, well, let's says god average time... *gggg*

By now - end of Dezember 2002 - I've managed to crunch about 46.500 WUs and are now at #630 or so worldwide. I am since the beginning part of SETI.Germany, the biggest german S@H-team. We're currently on rank 2 worldwide but won't be able to catch the current #1, TLC, before S@H1 ends. See you in BOINC, folks... ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've always known that there must be more than us in this endless universe up there. Saying that we're unique and alone in a cosmos, which is filled with billions of galaxis with hundreds of billions star systems each, is in my eyes arrogant.

I don't think that S@H will achieve it's goal, for it's tools and sensing technologies are far too small. But I participate 'cause it's a first step, and it's a good one. "Even the longest journey starts with a small step", remember?

Anyway: I'm (still) thrilled to be part of this, and even if S@H had and has it's (partially massive) problems with cheaters, which drove me away for two months, I still like it. I like the sportsmanish competition, the spirit of most of the folks here and the feeling of being part of something bigger than just a national program or somesuch.
I like the feeling to be here as Human, as inhabitant of this world, and not *just* as German.
