Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We are talking about an Infinite Universe here. There is no limit, Mathmaticians are wasting their time, if they believe it can be quantified. (Big Bang theory-my-*ss) However, this conclusion does not lead to the point of SETI. Whether or not life exists beyond this planet is not a given, but more of a Half full(positive)/ Half empty (negative) subjective issue. I happen to be a hopefull "believer" in the existance of life, not precluding intelligence, beyond this solemn rock.
The perilous picture painted by Hollywood of our certain doom from beyond the globe, by creatures of unimaginable form or power is by no manner impossible. We humans wreak havoc on the unknown regions of our own home. However, in the light of my half-full belief-state, that the likelihood this result is slim. For it is fear of that which we do not understand, our thought determines our experience.
I believe that we will find other life and they will be looking for us as we are them. This will likely be as two long lost friends who have lost touch with each other for 20 or so years, needing just to catch up on old times, and find out what has happened since.

As far as transmitting an attempt at a universal "Hello?", are we not yet doing this, with our 30 second television/ radio commericials?

I run SETI@home because i have several systems that are not being used 24 hours a day. And I in some sense competing with a few collegues for highest number of packets completed, although i am definitely losing.

This project is by far the biggest and more brilliant idea as far as clusters. I am grateful to be part of this search.
