| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I think that extraterrestrial life has to exist. If God is real and created all of this, why would he stop with putting life on just one planet? Why would he have even bothered to put all of the other galaxies and suns and planets there. If all of this occured independently of any supreme being or divine intervention, then there are countless galaxies of other stars and more planets than I want to ever dream about counting in this lifetime, making the potential for life on other planets so high that it can't be ignored.
I'm a little apprehensive about transmitting a beacon for others to find. I doubt that any race capable of interplanetary (or perhaps interstellar) travel would have any need to wage war against us, but at the very least we should at least try to get our affairs here in order and make ourselves presentable to any potentially more advanced species.
I run SETI at home because I've always been fascinated with UFO's and other similar phenomena. I think that some things we have developped here we did so because they were the most natural course. Other civilizations will doubtlessly develop some type of vehicles, likely with 4 wheels, as well as other things, such as radio. Those radio signals would slip into space, just as ours have, or perhaps they'll send out messages intent on letting others know that they are there.
I think that the search is worthwhile because of the huge potential that goes along with actually finding a signal. First and foremost, we'll find that we aren't alone in the universe, which I think could mean a great deal to every single person on the planet. Then of course we have the potential sharing of knowledge. Who knows what they have learned, they may know how to make cold fusion work or how to make really effecient solar cells (I was a power plant operator in the Navy so my thoughts focus on it constantly). We'll never know until we make contact though, will we. They may have a method for helping us deal with our nuclear waste or even how to cure cancer. |
