Personal background |
Born in 1959 in Liverpool, I live with my wife and our three children aged 10, 14 and 18. Working as a community nurse, my interest in computing extends to informatics in health care.
My interest in SETI started when viewing the constellations from my bedroom window as a youngster, and with movies, Star Trek. I have an SF library, which sadly is no longer current - no time! I read a brilliant book edited by Carl Sagan - 'Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence' (CETI), MIT 1977 2nd printing and was instantly hooked.
This book (and many other influences - Apollo, Voyager), brought together so many disparate disciplines, and helped crystalise my feelings about SETI. You see I believe SETI isn't just about 'them', of course, it's about us too.
Perhaps it is stretching the concept of holism too far, but Drake's equation and SETI have found a place within Hodges' Health Career - Care Domains - Model website at:

This is a tool for the 21st Century. A tool that:
* disarms yet empowers
* is simple yet complex
* local yet global
* applies to individuals and populations
* is neutral or activist
* is able to represent and disseminate
* engages and educates
* and transcends culture, politics, gender, beliefs and ethnicity.
More than ever health, the environment and democracy are like pearls threaded on a fine cord called quality of life.
We certainly need tools like Hodges' model.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Drakes' equation provides quite a lesson for those willing to reflect on its implications. It has been suggested before, but we should send politicians up into orbit, then have them reflect on their experience. The people, flora and fauna below and the factors that make up Drake's equation.
Arthur C Clarke recognised a long time ago the problems that religion (or people's abuse of religion) creates, killing in the name of God! Should that be a crime against humanity?
Our concept of human 'intelligence' has been extended to include 'emotional intelligence'. More than ever there must be a place in human hearts and minds for 'spiritual intelligence'? This would be a sign of our species' maturity. Necessary - whether this millenium or the next there comes a day:
'Contact Day'
There is - was, and will be - other life out there.
SETI is a brilliant project. As a nurse I feel a little guilty that our PC isn't engaged in proteomics, but then everyone needs time off and SETI is a very personal thing.
Thanks for this space and your time...
