Personal background
I am currently a Sophomore/Junior at the University of Arizona majoring in Astronomy and Physics with a Mathematics minor (all in one breath). I love astronomy, hence my major. I hope to someday get my PhD in theoretical astrophysics. Since I was a Junior in High School, I've known that I wanted to be an astrophysicist. One of my best friends introduced me to the books of Stephen Hawking, more specifically A Brief History of Time, and now I have all of his books. Ever since then, I haven't been able to get enough of this astronomy sutff. I am currently the Secretary and Webmaster of the UA Astronomy club, our website can be found here, and I also maintain my own website here where you can find so much more about myself.

I love reading and I love movies with a twist that make you think (ie. The Sixth Sense, and Memento). I am an avid sports watcher, especially baseball and football.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My favorite movie of all time was Contact based on Carl Sagan's book, which also happens to be my favorite book of all time. This was the first book and movie that really made me think about life out there. There is line that Ellie (the main character) says in the movie that basically sums up my beliefs, "The universe is a pretty big place, it's bigger than anything we've ever dreamed of before. So, if it's just us, it seems like an awefull waste of space."

I don't know when and how humans will discover it, I only can hope that when we do, people will be more open about it and less skeptical. Such a discovery would have wide ranging implications that could unite the world or destroy us, only we can decide.

It seems to me that a beacon is a moot point at the moment. Humans have been transmiting signals to space since the Olympic games in Germany. Extraterrestrials have been watching our sitcoms, talk shows and Star Trek for years now, if they have given heed to our faint signal and watched them. Should we broadcast a more powerful signal? I don't know, something like that could be a very devisive instrument. What language should it be transmited in, who should transmit, what ideas, etc..? Perhaps we should take a page from Carl Sagan and transmit in math and science.

I love SETI@home and run it in the background always on my computer. I run it because I want to be able to say that I contributed to the project that made one of the single most earth changing discoveries ever. My views on the project are to continue to expand as you have plans to do now. There are so many more possibilites for contact in the skies that we have only brushed the surface. Stay the course.
