Personal background
I'm a College Senior,(4th year, not a super!) who is reflecting on what the past 18 years of schooling has meant to him. As an Economics Major, it is my pleasure to know what makes the world spin and why people act the way they do, a scary prospect if you delve into the darkness that is humanity. My Dual Pent. 3 800s, 512 RDRAM computer has been, for the past year, crunching away and on 5/8/02, it reached the 500th WU. I'm a part of the University of Oregon team and it looks like my 14th place on the roster is where I'll stay for a while. I'm happy with what I've done and what I've contributed. As such, it is time for me to stop and wait until my situation comes through. Hawaii here I come! :) My island home of 18 years beckons me again and, while Oregon football will always rule, Hawaii is where the girls make me drool. Peace out, SETI, and godspeed, Alien messages. We're all listening, even the OSU Beavers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that humanity can not possibly be alone in this universe. On the beginning level, we are NOT alone on this planet since we share it with millions of different species, a lot more are being discovered daily. On our own species level, we are not special since there are many different ethnic groups and even families are wide-spread and different from each other. If we are not all common and alone, how can we have the arrogance to say that Earth is the only planet with life on it? In fact, we make the claim that we're "intelligent" but if we do make contact, it means that they were trying for a much longer period of time and thus they reached the level of broadcasting technology first and are far advanced than us. So where does this make us?

SETI@Home may well find nothing but, in itself, it has found what it needs to find: a collective conscience of people who are willing to spend the time and energy to do the search. We are the first generation on this planet with enough power and resources to make the concerted effort that much more promising. The only question is if we are ready for what we may find.
