Personal background
I am a student at the University of Houston. I am studying mechanical engineering and plan to start graduate work next spring. I am interested in optimization problems and fluid dynamics, particularly turbulent boundary layers and vortex reconnection phenomenon. I am currently working on a new imaging technique for velocimetry studies.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I chose to download the SETI software because I believe it is a worthwhile project. I am certain that we will find extraterrestrial life in the future although I think it is highly unlikely that we will find "intelligent life." I believe our best chance at finding life is through exploratory missions to the several hopeful sights within our own solar system. Although I don't think SETI will find life I believe that it can be a valuable tool to help us further our study of the universe. It would be very exciting to see evidence of "evaporating" black holes come from this research. Judging from the statistics I think this has been a very successful program. I would like to see more research done through this type of distributed computing system. Research done in this fashion is very visible to the public and anything we can do to get the general public interested in science is wonderful.
