I am an administrator and adjunct graduate faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Been an astronomy buff for most of the 38 years. I don't get nearly as much use out of my 10' Newt as I wwould like.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes. Though I wager that 99.9% of it is non-communicative. I think it likely that we will first infer life on other planets indirectly by finding planets 'like' ours assuming that they, like earth, could harbor organic compaounds.
2) No. I don't think we should advertise. I think we should sit and listen. In any case, we are already transmitting via TV and radio.
3) I think this is one of the most important questions for civilization today. I am proud to be involved in SETI.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
