Profile: Jared Weaver

Personal background
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I attended Uintah Elementary School, Stewart Jr. High School (now defunct), East High School, the University of Utah (where I majored in Broadcast Journalism) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona (where I majored in Aviation Management). In 1977 I received my pilot's certificate and began working in the aviation field. I am an Airline Transport Pilot type rated in the DC-3. I am also a certified flight and ground instructor. I work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Supervisory Aviation Safety Inspector assigned to the Oakland Flight Standards District Office.
We are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). We live in Oakley, California.
I run the screen saver on both my home and work computers. For hobbies, I am a genealogist and a woodworker.
My website is http://www.ecis.com/~flyboy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think we are not the only life forms in the universe. I also believe there is other intelligent life out there. I think if we discover an alien civilization it will be serendipitous. It will only be after we identify the alien civilization that we will go back through our data and see the signs glaring back at us. I think the possible benefits include yet another humbling realization that humans are not the pinnicle of creation and earth is not the center of the universe. That is a good thing. I can think of no dangers such a discovery would engender unless the aliens have somehow perfected supra-luminous interstellar travel.
I think we should send the beacons, but I don't think doing so will hasten our discovery of aliens nor their discovery of us. The distances are just too great. The first message should be mathematical. It should be followed by messages showing the diversity of human life on this planet. So, first science then social studies, then art.
I run the program because I have always been interested in astronomy and I think it is cool that I can contribute in some small way towards this scientific project. I think the project has the best chance of finding what's out there.
