Am pretty sure we're either:
all alone - in which case I contribute to this project simply because the concept of distributed computing on this scale was pretty much unknown before SETI and it's still a cool idea; or
so technologically and mentally insignificant that the folks out there pay about as much attention to us as we do the average anthill - in which case I contribute to this project because, like all good ants, I must scurry hither and dither.
