Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I can think of no better quote than that which follows here:

As a net is made up of a series of ties, so everything in this world is connected by a series of ties. If anyone thinks that the mesh of a net is an independent, isolated this, he is mistaken. It is called a net because it is made up of a series of interconnected meshes, eash mesh has its place and responsibility in relation to other meshes.

Common sense dictates that, despite the huge amounts of CPU power that is wasted running WindozeXP, there are still \\"some\\" computers out there with free CPU cycles...or more efficient operating systems. ;)

These vast numbers of underutilized machines (I know for a fact there\\'s at least THREE, anyway...;) sitting idly by doing nothing are a waste of power, potential, and money...so make use of your spare CPU cycles, folks! Put them to use for SCIENCE! I mean...if you\\'re spending money on hydro ANYWAY, why not be able to say:

\\"Yes! Unlike many, I have done my part and made a contribution to the advancement of science!"

(OK...so I was asleep, but hey...I can still SAY it, right?! d;^)

As to whether we're ever going to find extraterrestrial intelligence or not, I say that the chances are a lot better than it is to find it here on earth. (Look around, people...look around...)

To think that we're the only possible sentient beings in the solar system...well, that's reasonable to assume, really. Were we the first in the neighboorhood? Entirely possible. To assume that we're the ONLY ONES out of the billions of stars in this galaxy alone is almost Narccissistic...but to believe that out of the billions of glaxies that we're all there is...the poorest possible oddds lean far from that conclusion.

It's been said before that "perhaps" the reason we haven't found any intelligent life elsewhere is that we're simply the first intelligent species that's managed to get to a spacefaring level. I sincerely hope that's wrong, because the way we treat eachother, our planet, and it's future, we're not going to last long enough to meet the next generation of intelligent life, wherever it might be found...and we sure won't be providing any good role models if we ARE the first!
