Personal background
I'm a PhD Candidate at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I'm an avid SCIFI fan (like most scientists, I suppose), and I really hope SETI pans out.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe E.T. is out there. It would be, in my opinion, self-important and narrow-minded to think otherwise. Mankind is driven to discover, and there _will_ be both benefits and disadvantages in contacting new, sentient life. Nothing would bring humanity together like a new species (the 'We' and 'They' syndrome). However, it would be naive to assume they would be necessarily peaceful... there could be misuderstandings.

Nevertheless, I think we should have a beacon for others to find. It should project schematics of our solar system, our biology, and our major languages. But besides a message of peace, perhaps it would be fair to include representation of our mistakes from the past, too. I couldn't begin to suggest what form that might take, but it would be an honourable and even-handed thing to do.

I run SETI@HOME so I can feel involved in advancing our knowledge of our galaxy and beyond. If I can't ride the rocket, I'll help build the engines that will power it.
