Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. First ET life may exsist (probably does) however it is meaningless question a better question is does ET civilisations exsist?
For all practical purposes I believe ET civilisations do not exsist. Why have we not found them already, why can we not see evidence of them tampering with galaxy or hear their radio traffic broadcsting on many bands flooding the universe? Basicly why have they not landed on the white house lawn?
Either life is very rare (seems possable) OR intelligent life is very freaky (again I feel this may be true) OR the life time of an ET civilisation is not long anough for the satistical chance of two(or more) exsisting close to each other. It is the last reason that I am afraid may be all too true.
All arguments based on the "they use hyperspace communication or they have not discovered radio yet" are stupid as both simply mean such cases can not be detected so might as well not exsist.. the definition of ET civilisation is they transmit radio waves if you cannot do that you aint a civilisation (not intersteller that is)! Having said all that I think we should look as a negitive result over a period of say a few hundred years is just an important result as finding ET (perhaps more so frightning thought that)!!!! If Et does phone in, well all bets are off. anything from "so what" too complete social disintergration. the ramifications are beyond me or anyone else, i guess the one thing we really do not understand is ourselves and perhaps that is who we are looking for when we point our dishes too the sky...a comparasion to judge ourselves?

2 transmit a beacon..hmmmm why not as long as the cost is not excessive i guess we already broadcast. The counter argument that such activity is dangerous is not without merit. It may be a reason why we do not hear anyone perhaps the XENOPHOBES destroy anyone they hear or everyone is hiding (I think this rather unlikley)

3 why do I run Seti@home? Well it is a very well written and worthwhile piece of software. As for the project, I believe it h
