Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
extraterrestrial life exists but i doubt humans will discover it. i much rather think it will discover humans first and then let us know. when this will happen? probably only in a few hundred or thousand years.
the benefits could be higher technology, new biological and chemical discoveries but not necessarily. it could as well be that we discover them and they are less developed than us ...or just developed in different areas of science.
sending a beacon is a good idea, the information included should be basic physical data about our planet and basics like our numbers etc. it should be formated as black and white pictures with a black, a white and a black horizonal line in the beginning so they know its width. the data should be illustrated instead of written so they can understand it easily. for example the numbers are written and dots beside them represent the numbers. also gravity can be shown as a slice of a big circle (earth) and a small circle along with an arrow towards earth.
i run seti so my idle CPU time is used to help science and the seti institute to develop faster so eventually we might find extraterrestrial life earlier than without that development.
