Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Personally i don't think extraterrestrial life exists, though i keep an open mind towards it's possibility. However, (apart from astronauts on duty) i'm pretty sure there's no *intelligent* life out there. According to the evolutiontheory the chance of us humans having become the way we are, are just about nil--not to mention other life preceding- or repeating us. Life can only evolve to another form (macro evolution) if it's well aware of itself, it must be aware of it's own DNA-programming. The fact that our scientists are still feeling their way around in the complex world of the inner workings of the human body (and psyche) is very much contradicting this. Knowledge cannot come from no-knowledge, just as nothing can come from a void (if something does come from it, then the void wasn't quite void). Eventhough the odds are very small, life could have become from nothing... but it's very very unlikely it would also evolve into something more complex. I run the SETI program because i like the challenge of producing the most results in the shortest time possible. And should we ever find ``intelligent'' life (which is not very likely, because truely intelligent life would hide from us as far as possible), i can proudly boast about my share in the discovery :P -- Jeroen
