Personal background
Based in Sydney, Australia I visited the Parkes Radio telescope at an early age and was amazed you could look into space with something other than an eyepiece! 30 years later we are still looking and listening - not sure if we found anything or if we know what we would do with the info if we did, but it does at least find gainfull employment for all those PC's sitting idle overnight.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Its hard to imagine that we are the only 'life' in the universe - it does seem a large place and chances are there is some group out there diing the same thigs as we are - but unless they started doing it when there were dinosaurs on earth, we will not be hearing from them yet. Perhaps if we assume it from within the milky way, then we might have a better chance.

One thing is for sure - if we don't look we will never know!

We probably have been transmitting for some time - but not at a very powerful level. So if we are to start a specific transmision it would need to be something distinct that would separate itself from all the other noise out there - how about the Rugby rules and results. There is no wa that the rules for that game could be anything other than from an alien lifeform.

Why do I run SETI@home? It seemed a waste to play silly unproductive screen savers on the idle machines - at least now they are doing something!
