Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life does exist, but not life as we know it. I have no idea how or when we will discover it, but IMHO, ET's have been amongst our population for 100's if not 1000's of years already.

Benefits of discovery:

The possibilities are endless: medical advances and agricultural innovations come to mind.

Dangers involved:

Ignorance of humankind in general could inhibit any possible benefits.

Why do I run Seti@home:

I have been running it since May of 1999, first because it was the thing to do, and now to make my own personal contribution to the combined efforts to find ET.
I used the screensaver the first year and quit for nearly 9 1/2 months due to the fact that it took over 179 hours plus some minutes to even complete my first WU (600 Athlon then).

But since November of 2000 I have
used the CLI version (Command Line Interface) and both Seti Driver and Seti Spy,
both allowing me to hide the client and view information as needed.  I also use Seti Watch allows me to monitor the CLI on both of my boxes. I currently (9-2002) am able to finish between 10-11 WUs a day).

My views on the project: It is an excellent and effortless way to help the search for extraterrestrial life.
