Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that there is an inescapable paradox with SETI- based on the number of stars and the probability of ones with worlds where life is possible, there should be thousands or millions of civilisations in the Galaxy.

However, the string of coincidences that lead our plant to being habitable for life (orbit, metalicity of our sun, proximity to other stars, survival of bombardment from astroids and comets, location in a "safe" part of the galaxy, etc, etc), sobers us up a bit and indicates that life may be more rare than we expect...

But as with all fields of science, the only way to solve such a paradox is through observation- thus SETI@home.

SETI@home may not find little green men, but in doing so will certainly help us get a better perspective on whether or not life is out there...
