Profile: Jerry L Brown

Personal background
Greetings from the Great U.S. Midwest. I am not a scientist, but rather a former manager, analyst, and teacher. In my spare time I sing, act, and manage arts-based not-for-profit organizations. In addition I love to travel.

My deep interest (as an avocation) in Astronomy and related sciences extend back more than forty years, to a cold winter night when I first looked through a telescope at the star Sirius. Since then my interest in the dark reaches of outer space have never wavered. My sincere wish is to see one day a regular traffic in interstellar travel. My travel bug again. (Unfortunately though, I think the laws of physics may be against us in this regard.)

Cheers and Ciao (Tschau)!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life exists, simply because of the vast space and extraordinary range of environments available for it to occupy. Even more so I believe extraterrestrial life has existed for a few billion years, since the first or second wave of supernovae implosions flung off materials capable of producing carbon-based organic materials. My guess is that humans will discover more than one other intelligent extraterrestrial life-form within 50 to 75 years (before 2100). I believe the possible benefits will lie in the area of exposure of new technologies. These may be self-developed, like in the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo space programs. The dangers of these discoveries will also, I think, be self-generated: mainly a loss of belief in certain currently common faiths, but these will be replaced with a new enlightenment.

I do not believe humans should signal our presence to other life forms, at least not at this time. Our human culture needs to mature more before we could be considered suitable company for any lifeforms capable of receiving such a beacon and responding effectively to it.

I run SETI@Home at home. I believe these initial steps at discovery are critical and deserve support from anyone interested in the benefits of the knowledge to be gained.
