Personal background
Begining this small description about me, i am from Greece, born in Germany (Old Western Germany), 29 years old. I studied Mechanical Engineering in the Technical Educational Institute of Piraeus and I have the joy to do what i've studied for a living. I 've got music as my second job (yes, second job and not an easy thing to do).
Because of my studies and work, I happen to be dealing with computers and various OS's and applications (UNIX, NOVELL, LINUX and Microsoft operating systems) for more than ten (10) years and especially with C.A.D. Application. The funny in this case is that I decided to buy my own PC just a month ago. All these years i was working (and learning) on computers in my university, my work and during my military services without having any serious thoughts of having my own machine. It seems that some things we just desire, become needs as time passes by.
My job as a mucisian started as a hobby, and later it became a job absolutely by chance. Anyway, I strongly believe this job is quite a responsibility, because it gives you the ability to communicate with people and influence them with positive or negative consequences. So my opinion is that anyone doing this job should watch very carefully what, how and when he passes any message to the people. Being behind a microphone gives you a small or big amount of power over the people, so you have to use it wisely.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It's rather funny to think that from all the universe, life has "decided" to visit ONLY this tiny blue planet we walk on. In cold statistics, there have to be many planets with the right conditions for life to be developed and supported maybe AS WE KNOW IT. Who said life develops with only one way?
I can only guess that if we 've made it all this way, some others out there might have done it too, or gone further. If they try to find others (us among them) with similar comm. technology, there is a chance for them to find us, OR for us to to find them. If they use comm. technology and protocolls we are not even aware of, that's a big issue. Anyway it's worth of trying. Who knows...
If such a discovery occurs, the following steps must be considered and planned very carefully, considering all the possible problems we can imagine that may occur and ofcourse, control people's panic and natural fear. After all, we will no longer be alone in the universe like it seemed before.
If we decide to sent another beakon after Voyager, it should be fast enough to cover great distances in a reasonable time limit and clever enough to avoid obstacles. It's signal should be tranmitted optically and by radio. The information doesn't have to be much different from that stored in Voyager: Simple and Easy to be identified.
SETI is the first step in the search for intelligence beyond our planet. My intension is not ofcourse to be the first who finds the ET, but to give a hand on this effort. Anyway, it is the best we can do at this time. After all, they might find us first. If such a thing happens, God help us from our insanity...
...which is best? to remain blind or try to open our eyes? time will show. My personal opinion? What the hell, let's give it a shot!!!
