Personal background
I grew up in Berkeley, CA, but I live in Lafayette, CA now, not too far from Berkeley. I went to UC Berkeley and graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering. I work in San Francisco as an estimator for a construction company. I'm 50 years old, which looks really funny to me when I write it down. Who knew I would ever get this old? Most of my girlfriends (and there are not too many, trust me) swear I act juvenile for my age, which I can never figure out if it is a compliment or not.
Anyway, for hobbies I take guitar lessons, ride a bike, computers(of course). I really suck at guitar. I think it has something to do with my complete lack of rhythm and coordination (who knew you needed rhythm to play guitar?). But I don't let it get me down. I did not start taking lessons till I was 48, so I got a late start. I just wish I could play my guitar as well as the 9 year old chinese girl who sits next to me in class.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I read about the Seti@home project somewhere and figured there must be some kind of GRAND PRIZE for the person who detects an ET signal, so I signed up. I'm hoping to win at least 2 tickets to Hawaii, or maybe free guitar lessons.
Being a civil engineer, I know nothing about radio signals. But I have read that tv signals would most likely be the ones that are detected from the earth. I think that would be the same for a alien civilization. So I figure the first signals from an alien civilization will be their equivalent of the I Love Lucy show, or possibly Howdy Doody. If such a signal is detected, I expect the US Government will spend billions of dollars trying to decode it, just to find out that alien civilizations have commercials selling laundry soap that are just as stupid as ours. I believe this is a highly worthwhile goal. To know that their are others out in the universe who like to turn their minds to mush watching tv.
