Personal background
Bloody Computers, they're an addiction and a curse.
Current Machines dedicated to crunching:
Athlon 1600
Pentium II 400
Celeron 400
Celeron 300
When I first started with the screen saver version was doing one every 3 days!
Now use:
Setigate, Lin-Seti and NT and unix CLI clients and do about 10 - 11 per day. Not bad for some old junkers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Seti@home? Great!
So what happens when we find something? What happens if we make some sort of contact?
There are some inherent assumptions that we make when we think of Extraterrestrial Life. Firstly, and obviously that we are expecting them to be within 60 or so years of out technological evolution. (The first radio signal transmission strong enough to leave our planet were of the Berlin Olympics with Hitler, Read CONTACT by the late great Carl Sagan)
Secondly, we assume that they would WANT to talk to us. Think about it. If we look at our own society, how many people try to talk to monkeys or dolphins? These guys are classed as almost sentient. Can we talk to them? No, not really. We can probably play Simon says with them, but without some sort of rosetta stone we don't have the ability to speak outside of our own species.
Anyhow, this project is exploration and discovery. Lets cross the communication bridge when we come to it.
