Profile: Bill Whitman

Personal background
36 year old Army JAG Captain. Been an attorney for ten years but in college I was a philosopher and have always loved astronomy which is probably why I like sci-fi stuff (love thinking about the possibilities of life and our future in the cosmos). Presently live in Atlanta, GA but am from Arizona and I really miss the wide open dark skies. I used to stare up at the heavens and just watch and think.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think life must exist somewhere but I think it'll be a long time before we actually contact others. It'll probably be passive detection first, like what the SETI project is looking for. I hope mankind benefits from our encounter . . . but I think that the ultimate benefit will come after a long period of pain that our society will go through when it's confirmed that we are not the only life in the universe. It will shake the foundations of a lot of people's religious beliefs and our cultural/species self-esteem.
