Personal background
Don't ask me why people in Texas can't call their children whole names, but RJ does roll off the tongue very nicely. I'm a perpetual student who plans on being the first SETI success so that I can take over the universe. Ok, actually I am in my 7th year of college and I will be starting medical school this year so that I can add 4 more on before I go to law school. I need to apply for the Surgeon General's job: we need more Space and Science orientated individuals influencing our actions--of course I'd hate to waste a good asteroid when we can strip-mine another forested mountain. To all the other science dweebs out there (I don't know how so many of us ended up being firefighters but Hi ya'll), keep crunching the numbers and maybe we'll get to take a joy-ride in the X-prize if we hit it big. Well that or start a boy-band and practice the mother tongue, da?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET is more than likely out there, but how we will discover it is the question: Are they so far beyond our communication level that they don't use radio waves and haven't for so long they have 'passed' us? What if they rely on Lidar and other optical wavelengths, telepathy, no Long Distance communication, require pheromone packets, gravity pulses? What if they have been covering tracks since they started? The benefits and dangers seem to equally weigh each other out but as my undergrad was in Biology/Anthropology I have to be concerned with cultural misunderstandings and basic biological issues: what if they require proximity to communicate but we cannot inhabit the environment? There are always points of contention which can arise and if we communicate we should be doing it in neutral territories and be the recipient rather than the progenitor because we--scientists--are known to be flexible and so can accommodate for them in order to avoid conflict. Of course ET would probably reach the same conclusion but if that is the case, nothing works better than comparing science, "So what do you call a^2 b^2 = C^2?"
Humans are already transmitting a beacon, lots of them on lots of wavelengths. If a separate beacon were to be sent, an alternating pattern, such as short-short-short long-long with the shorts continuously increasing and then repeating after 100 at a higher amplitude just to show that it was non-random while protecting us from the release of too much information. Also it should be broadcast on normal broadcast frequencies which can escape the ionosphere with enough power to drown them out--oh yeah and from Alpha Centauri. That or we can just detonate a few "gigaton" bombs to the tone of Shave and A Haircut. We would assume that a space faring race would avoid conflict but there is a wonderful evolutionary model used to ascertain the best approach to survival and the best approach is to find someone who is willing to cooperate with you and then cheat, not for pooling resources (paradigms lost).
