Personal background
I am 40 years old and live in the hills 20 km east of Perth, Western Australia. I have a beautiful wife and three wonderful children 15, 17 ad 19 years old.

My wife and I run a small software development company. With subcontractors, we are currently designing and implementing a replacement system for control of the Metro Passenger Railway here in Perth, using Linux, Tru64 (DEC Unix), Windows NT and embedded systems.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I heard a short radio article on Seti@Home.

2. I like the idea of making use of unused CPU cycles. If the search for a cure to some disease was able to be farmed out like seti@home, I would do that.

I think statistically there should be 'life' in other places in our universe.

3. If we found a signal that was intentionally sent (if we could determine this), then we might assume the sender would not be malevolent.

The transit times to distant places are such that we could not have a 'chat' with others. If we transmitted something it should be a snapshot of life in our world.

We are dealing with the complete unknown and the range of possibilities are possibly not fathomable. It is difficult not to make assumptions.

If sending messages is expensive (organisation, resources, etc.), I hope we have though of increasing the chance of it being understood by designing a method of representation that we think could be easily interpreted (all kinds of assumptions here).

Why not just try it anyway - send messages!
