Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life surely exists. We are not alone in this galaxy. I don't know if my generation is blessed to make contact with other intelligence lifeforms but in the near future I believe that we will have better results as the computers evolve and more people actively participate in the project.
The benefits from a possible contact are many. New technological advancements, improved medical treatments, new ways of transportation, etc. But we must be prepared to accept that the possible lifeforms we will discover are not anatomically designed as we are. There are infinite possibillities in the ladder of the evolution. As for dangers the only one that I can think is that no one can quaranty us that they will be friendly towards us.
Humans must do in my opinion whatever is possible to broad their possibillities to make contact. We must not rely only in listening the sounds from the space but we must become active sending probes in the far reaches of the universe. As for what information this probes must contain we can discuss for hours. At least they must contain mathematics, sign of intelligent and thinking lifeforms.
