Personal background |
My name is Tim, in my (very) late thirties, but it certainly doesn't show yet in my behaviour!!! I'm mad about motorcycling, sailing, and I intend to take up horse riding (again) in the very near future. One day I'd like to take flying lessons. I've been lucky enough not only to meet the woman I want to grow old with over fourteen years ago (the longest time we've been apart since then is two weeks --- aaah!) - but also to have known at an early age what my ideal career is - teaching - and better yet I get paid to have all this fun! |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Well, the English bookmakers, Ladbrookes, once calculated that life would be discovered on Mars before Finland (my adopted home country) would win the Eurovision Song Contest. Since Finland will *NEVER* win the Eurovision Song Contest I guess that means that extra terrestrial life will, eventually be discovered ...
2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? Absolutely. A big sign saying "For Your Own Safety, Keep Out!" would probably be a good idea with the world in its current state. I mean, the two biggest businesses on the planet are the arms trade and drugs. COME ON, PLANET, WAKE UP!!!
3. Why do I run SETI@home? A more "advanced" civilization than ours will be more advanced because it has stopped being as self-destructive as mankind --- see above --- and as a teacher I know we really need to learn from "them" how to stop our obsession with destruction, because we are obviously failing to learn from our own mistakes. SETI@home gives me a chance to do something constructive for mankind in a small but concrete way. |
