Personal background
Hi...well im 16 years old and am from Wales in the UK. I just started college where i took Chemistry, Discrete Maths, Computing and Music Tech. I was taking physics because im really interested in the universe..but properties of rubber bored me too much.... I found out about this site when my college took us to Cardiff University to see have a lecture on taking physics courses at uni. When i saw about this i felt i had to sign up. Im very interested in computers and the way they work..so its another good oportunity for me to do some thing i enjoy. Thats all there is for me to say atm.... Cya
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Firstly..i think that this site is great!! i think its amazing that i can be a part of something so big..while sitting at hime playing games :P .
I do think there is a posibility that extraterrestrial life exists, and i thik it is only a mater of time before we find it. with more people using this at home...the search should be much quicker than previously thought. When we find them im not too sure what to expect...when we find extraterrestrial life...will these be intelligent creatures...if they are intelligent..will they know we exist..or will we have to initiate contact with them. What will they look like..microscopic bacteria..or very very large creatures...wot conditions will they live in etc...theres too much to really comprehend atm.
If we transmit a beacon..it may find life that can interpret wot it means...and then again it may not. If it ws to be done it would have to be in some form of communication everyone can understand or at least interpret. Your probably gona say ive watched too many films..but maths is the only thing which cant be changed (well to a certain extent). Sending some sort of mathamatical signal may have some efect. Lots more sorts of information could be sent..but how would we send it...microwaves?? would they be able to interpret the data from the waves to the real data?? im not so sure about that..
As i said..im running SETI@home because im very interested in the universe..and i think me doing this lets me feel like i have played a part in the search for extraterrestrial life. Its a great project...however..i do think you should try and make more of an involvement with schools...comprehensive schools for example. My old comprehensive school had a 10mb/sec internet connection..and running 20 copies of this program would have been no trouble to them if they were to take part provide them with sum small things such as posters, leafelets etc...if u had 20 schools doing this @ 20 computers each 24/7 you would get a lot of proccessing done!
