Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Answers to the above questions:
1A-Do I think ETL exists? Given that we have no real idea or concept of what the word 'infinity' means nor how it relates to the 'complete' size of the universe I would have to say it is impossible for life to NOT exist.
1BHow will humans discover it? We may never discover it...we simply may not be meant to discover it. When?...well, that depends on how badly we want to discover it right? How?...How depends on when, and how fast science progresses.
2-A beacon? I don't think this is nessesary, Time is on our side and we would be better served by searching for beams that have been transmitted in the past. Besides, we have been 'transmitting' signals for the past 100 years in the form of radio and television signals.
3- I run SETI@home because I have additional computers sitting doing nothing and Looking for remote signals may be like playing the lottery BUT, if my computer DOES detect the signal that leads to breakthroughs in science then why not be the one to get the credit. besides, I can think of worse things to do with my time.
3B-My views on SETI?..I think it is a good idea although I think it should be taken more seriously...lets face it, does a scientifically minded person really want to see pictures of 'moving day' on the SETI website?...I think not.
Suggestions: Show poeple like me how to interperate the signals better instead of just letting us watch a screensaver...there are those of us out there that may want to get more deeply involved without moving to Aricebo right?
