Profile: D'Arcy McCallum

Personal background
My wife Cecile and I live in a patch of meadows, bush and rock up on the Niagara Escarpment not all that far west of Toronto. We share the place with a dog, a couple of cats, indoor fish (mollies), outdoor fish (koi), plus a peacock who wandered in one day and decided to stay. We can't really keep track of the other birds, frogs and toads, bats, mice, moles, raccoons, possums, chipmunks, red, black and gray squirrels, porcupines, skunks and deer that also call this place home. We humans are minority and (at best)transient stakeholders.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It is inconceivable that life has not arisen elsewhere. And while the vast distances between stars even within our own galaxy, the probable rarity of life-conducive planets, the length of time it takes to evolve to a level capable of reaching out through the universe combined with (as far as we know)the profound limitations imposed by the speed of light combine to make it highly unlikely that we'll be able to hear a signal from (let alone exchange signals with) another civilization, what we can be absolutely sure of is that we'll never hear unless we listen. As for sending a signal ourselves - that had best wait until we can generate something with many, many more magnitudes of power that we can even dream of now, and perhaps some better idea where to beam to.

My puny contribution to SETI@Home? - better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
