Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Certainly extraterrestrial life exists. It's a BIG universe.
Will we discover it? Probably, within then next hundred years. However, we may not be able to understand its communications for another century.
Benefits: bigger "world view." Perhaps new technology. Maybe even trade eventually, tho I think info will be the main exchange. Eventually: survival of the species beyond the life of our earth.
Dangers: learn stuff that destroys us before we learn to control it. E.G. firewater
2. No beacon. Safer to listen & learn. Maybe a beacon in a few centuries if listening doesn't work.
3. I run SETI to help discover more about the universe.
SETI is a grand effort to use idle cpu cycles in a worthy cause, one with a huge possible upside.
Suggestions:
- Use Athlon and Intel special instructions to speed calculations
- Support scheduling of silent dialup to wee hours (as well as flashing icon)
- Display all our latest stats in the screen saver screen & "Thanks"
