Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@home appeals to me for several reasons. One is the chance as a lay individual to participate in scientific research, another is the notion that there is something out there and we are not alone in the universe.

Nothing is without risk but we have been transmitting beacons into outer space for a century already, so it seems silly to worry about it now! However I don't think we should be transmitting specific invitations to make contact until we are more mature and advanced in our politics and technology. In particular we should be routinely exploring our own solar system by means of manned space travel so we have a chance of being on level terms if contact is ever made.
