Personal background
I am an astronomy nut...I am also a believer in the theory that we were seeded on this planet as an experiment, to see which race would be the most intelligent, the most prolific, etc. The "god" that put us here was nothing more than another humanoid species that either possibily cloned or genetically engineered us for the experiment, just as we clone or experiment with animals and laboratory virus and bacteria.
They may be watching, or they may be extinct; but it is only natural to assume that if we are here, by whatever means, then there are others.
Some of us may believe that our future is in the stars...that this world is heading for a catastrofic end because of pollution, over crowding, greed and just plain stupidity...well, that is possible.
I believe that the governments of the world do not support this kind of research because they either already know the answer, or they believe we are not ready for the ramifications of such a discovery.
Scientific knowledge and experimentation are the only answers. Keep looking,keep listening, and keep documenting new discoveries, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. Our survival is not just a global thing;
it is a UNIVERSAL thing!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Question 1) Of course other life exists. If the others are monitoring our advancements, when and if we reach their level of knowledge is when the discovery will be made. They may choose to end the experiment, like sterilize the petri dish if you will; or they may choose to let us continue until we present a threat to the rest of the universe...who knows. The others could be violent in nature, and choose to conquer us as a world, or they may help us with a new procedure utilizing raw materials here on earth to clean and revitalize the planet and keep pollution at a minimum, or eliminate it altogether.

Question 2) I'm not so sure that a beacon is necessary. If we are listening for their signals from radio and TV broadcasts, they've probably already discovered ours, and have found additional signals to either be redundant, or have interpreted them as we have interpreted incoming signals, as being just space noise.

Question 3) I run it because I'm curious. The project is valuable, if for no other reason than as an early warning device. I would suggest listening to wave lengths that we would not normally view as useful for transmission. Sort it all out, signal by signal, and analyze each one. It'll take a while.
