Profile: Cyber Armor

Personal background
I grew up too fast, went in to the military too young, became a Paramedic but was too aggressive... and I've been doing computing/networking ever since. Since 2003 i have focused solely on Linux.

I live in the DFW metroplex of Texas and I currently am involved in serving interactive content to digital cable/satellite receivers. On the side I am also in the process of writing some Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels (I have 3 of them going and cannot decide which one to focus on - hehe).

For entertainment my wonderful wife and I play PC-based games. She currently plays World of Warcraft and I play Eve Online and Unreal Tournament 2004.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Just looking at the numbers from the Theory of Probability I have always thought it arrogant of us to assume we are the only intelligent life in the universe. In my opinion this idea of solitude was institued by European Christian organizations (most likely the Catholic church) as the thought of anything ET conflicts with their view of our existence. In their minds it makes us "non-special" and it threatens what they see as God's plans for us. Bollocks to that!

If we were to send a signal of our own (an intentional signal, that is) I think we would want to send information that shows our presence and power without tipping our hand too much. Binary images of some of our spacecraft, some natural landmarks, the basic human form (both male and female in the Voyager style) and the data of the composition of our planet's atmosphere as well as a set of patterned mathematical equations. This information is all relevant and descriptive of an intelligent civilization yet it names no seat of power, shows no identifiable cities and leaves out the fact that we've harnessed the atom. Aces in the hole for a worst-case-scenario and easily displayed to friendlies.

I love this project. I have no problem running SETI@Home on any of my systems and they run 24/7 anyway to extend their half-life. Organizations will be modeling after SETI@Home for years to come but SETI will always be a special thing to me.
