| Personal background |
Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to become one of 3 things: a) A scientist (astrophysicist, actually) and b) A Spacefarer.
Unfortunately, my lack of prowess in mathematics came in the way, and destiny took me down the path of computers.
Fortunately though, I can still get a taste of space through the PC games I play, and through SETI.
Someday, I hope to make it to space too. I hear the Russians will take anybody to the space station for 20 million dollars. All I have to do now is look for sponsors. Interested? Mail me at badjag@operamail.com |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Extraterrestrial life definitely exists. No doubt about that. But it is even more sure that they will be nothing like us. Mostly, at least. The conditions under which life was born are unique to each environment. "They'll" not have more than a couple of common features with us. Then again, I'm no evolutionary expert. I'm just saying this so I don't have to eat my non-existent hat later on.
Will we find ET? I read somewhere that the surest sign that intelligent life exists is that they haven't tried to contact us. I believe that's pretty true. When we can't even live with each other, how're we going to accept hideous (according to human standards) aliens? Or maybe they'll actually bring about a better understanding of who we are. Only the Force knows. We're already transmitting tons of signals into space, TV and radio mostly. Doesn't paint a very flattering picture of us, but it's too late to change that now.
I run SETI because it's the only way I have of reaching for a lifelong dream, even though I don't really give this project much chance. Maybe, just maybe, we will find someone. At the rate things are going south though, it's more likely that we'll all just wipe all life off the face of this earth.
My only suggestion is that SETI should place more emphasis on the command line client, and advertise it as aggrssively as the screensaver. Any serious SETIer knows that the command line rox, and the vast majority of results come from there. It's time everybody got to know about the amazing speed of the command line client.
On a final note, if you're an alien, and you like what I've said so far, PLEASE TAKE ME ON YOUR SHIP!!! |
