Personal background
I am a 37 year old, married, mother of one. I work as a cost accountant. My interests include reading and gardening, but my time is mostly consumed with little league, Pop Warner and 5th grade homework. I suffer from math envy. Since childhood, I have been wathing the night sky, fascinated with the shimmering lights. I wanted to be an astronomer. That dream was dashed in the 7th grade, when I was subjected to algebra. I continued my interest in the stars, but only on the coattails of the scientists talented enough to write what they were discovering so that I could understand it. I idolize Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. And it's a happy day when the Discover magazine is delivered to my mail box.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that ET life exists. We would be incredibly vain to think otherwise. Space is BIG. I'm hoping that SETI will get the signal that starts the road to proof. If we do hear something, you know that more will jump on board and more funding will become available.

The benefits? Other than the joy of discovery and knowledge, I don't know.
The dangers? I'm not so sure that humanity is prepared to accept that we are not the only intelligent beings out there. It would probably start a new age of reasoning, but it would be a rocky start.

I run SETI at home for 2 reasons: to make a contribution to science in the only way I can; and (selfishly) to be the one with the computer that crunched the data that heard an ET signal.
