Personal background
I'm from Leicester in the United Kingdom, and I was born in 1982. I am currently reading Software Engineering at De Montfort University. In addition to my studies, I enjoy the occasional Quake game, and play the Oboe.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If extraterrestrial life exists, then I suspect that it is unlikely to be detected. If I am wrong, and it is discovered, then people may well refuse to belive this and could react badly.

I cannot see how a beacon would be of use - isn't the Earth is already lit up like a Christmas tree? If so, any intelligence capable of receiving a signal from a beacon would surely know of our existance already.

Even though I can't see much chance of SETI@home finding extraterrestrial life, I see no reason not to look for it. Science has always searched for answers where they are neither expected nor required, and this has served us well.
