Personal background
I'm Steve Kirby. Grew up in Reno, NV. Can't remember how I heard about setiathome, but thought that it was cool to use the idle time of my machine to do something useful.
My scientific interest now is on understanding Quantum Gracity... that is where I think the next big breakthrough will be... understanding how gravity works will open a lot of doors...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think ET life exisits. I suspect it is all over the place, but since we have barely left Earth I don't expect to find any for a while. Europa could have some. Maybe Mars?
I don't know if we will ever communicate with another civilization through radiowaves though.
1) The time lag is so large that actual communication is difficult.
2) I think the time that civilization's use radio waves will be relatively short in time, and that other forms of communication will take their place. e.g. Quantum based.
3) I still wonder if we haven't already had contact.

In any case, my views are that we focus on taking care of business here. Focus on getting Earth a bit more stable, and focus on the basic technologies that will enable us to take the search to the next level. (e.g. Quantum)

Until that clear focus is there, however, I think that setiathome is a great way to remind us all to reach out and keep an open mind to what is beyond us.
