Profile: Al Evans

Personal background
I live in Portland, Oregon, along with a 12-year-old formerly male cat by the name of Shadow. For twenty-one years, working in one part or another of the office products industry has paid my rent and put food on the table. Of that time, the last twelve years have been spent working for a large wholesale distributor of office products.

To nurture my inner self, I write science fiction stories. I am not yet published, but I am ever hopeful. Currently I am working on a different sort of vampire novel, set in Portland in the not-too-distant future, and several short stories.

When I'm writing (and at other times too, for that matter) I enjoy listening to jazz and blues music, and I am now the Saturday night, 6-9PM volunteer DJ on KMHD (89.1 FM), Portland's non-commercial jazz and blues station. Being on the radio is a lot of fun and I'm really getting a kick out of it. Maybe I'll even become good at it one day!

Last but not least, I am the webmaster of "Remember Q-Link!" a web site devoted to keeping alive the memory of Quantum Link, one of the earliest online services. Q-Link, as it was known by its members, was for Commodore 64 computers. I'm sorry to say Q-Link eventually grew up to become America Online. I was on Q from 1987 until that dark Halloween night in 1994 when AOL Inc. pulled the plug on it. During my years on Q, I was lucky enough to hold several remote staff positions, including Apps Chat Host, Auditorium Emcee, and QGuide. In February of 2000, "USA Today" did a feature article on Q-Link in which my web site and I played a role, along with another former Q-Linker. I have registered the domain name "qlinklives.org", which is where the site is today. If you find a few spare minutes, please stop by and visit.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I do believe there is other life in the universe. I have my doubts as to whether or not we'll ever find that life, the size of the universe being what it is, but hey... we'll never know if we don't look! Despite my doubts, I would love to see the day when we make first contact. Perhaps then we (meaning all of humanity) will finally begin to learn to put aside our childish differences and focus instead on more positive pursuits.
