Profile: Will Hunter

Personal background
I'm a 23-year-old Political Science student at the University of Toronto. My hobbies are quite varied. Sometimes I obsess over politics and newspapers, other times I regress into comic book mode, and yet other times I'm more social, partying and dancing at at raves, concerts, weddings, book launches, you name it. Most of all I like spending time with my girlfriend, Veronica. At the moment my future plans are to branch off into journalism.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I do think extraterrestrial life exists, but without knowing more about its nature it's impossible to say when and how will humans discover it. The effects are also unknowable. The only analogy is more advanced civilizations discovering less advanced ones. In those cases, the culture of the native population was fundamentally changed, usually for the worse. This is quite possible with extraterrestrial life. No longer believing we are the centre of the universe, we might lose some of that fundamental aggressive nature that has been so characteristic of the human race. Then again, this might not be such a bad thing.

2. We should transmit a beacon with a very simple message of greetings. More information might indicate more than we want to give away (if they're hostile).

3. I think the project is excellent, but it should be expanded into other areas. Clearly searching radiowaves hasn't produced much as of yet.
