Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think that the number of stars in just our galaxy-let alone the universe-makes it impossible to think we are alone. I don't know how we will discover extraterrestrial life but that it's just a matter of time until we do. We humans are persistent and very ingenious. The benefits could be advanced technology; the dangers could be that they aren't friendly.
2. Yes. Location on star charts and possibly the human genome.
3. For one, I think that the idea of shared computing is another example of our human ingenuity. Also, I recently purchased a new computer with an AMD Athlon XP 2800 processor running Windows XP Home and upgraded the ram-for now-to 1024 megabytes. Most of the time, the processor is only running at a use percentage somewhere in the teens. I figure that it might as well be doing something useful.
