Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that we will eventually find extra-terrestrial life, though it may not take the form of our popular representations. Just like many others, I feel that there is something of a paradox when attempting to decide the benefits or disadvantages of finding life elsewhere in the universe. By locating life we would finally be able to say that we are not alone. But by definition, doing so will render our very existence virtually irrelevant and will undoubtedly have adverse effects on many people’s beliefs. Having said that, I really hope that we manage to at least pick up signals or transmissions in my lifetime and I'm hoping that the human race can adapt to the change without significant problems. I think that SETI@home is a tentative first step in helping us achieve a smooth transition when the time finally comes. Obviously the project has achieved some landmark objectives in distributed processing and allowed us to process so much more information over a shorter period of time. However I think that the side affects have been just as important. For example, bringing people together across the entire globe, no matter what their language, colour, race or beliefs. Let's hope that in time more projects like SETI@home can be created and maybe we will all be able to live better lives in the future, through working together, as one.
