Personal background

My name is Lee Lewis

My name is Lee Lewis. I live in St. Louis, MO, downtown, next to the famous Gateway Arch. I became a member of SETI about 20 years ago when Carl Sagen was President. It was in December of 1999 that I first began running Seti@home. I am now running it on 3 computers and have as of today (6/24/03) completed 3.756 hours of CPU time (in 3.564 years). I am glad to have this chance to contribute in some small way to a much larger project!

Also a lover of Science Fiction, check out my personal website at www.jubchuQun.com. If you’re a Klingon fan, it’s a "must see."

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

 Do you think extraterrestrial life exists

Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it?

It seems almost a mathematical certainty that there must be extraterrestrial life. Of all the infinite galaxies and the trillions of stars and uncounted planets, it is al most inconceivable and vastly arrogant of us to think that WE are the only life in the universe. Weather that life is intelligent/sentient, inferior or superior (or "other")… we may never know. If the distances between worlds can be traversed is the big question.

What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

The biggest benefit wold be the survival of the human race. The greatest danger is the destruction of the human race. As with any frontier, there will be obstacles, challenges, dangers and wonders. We can only hope that we, or our descendants make the right decisions.

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?

Of course we should. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained," as the saying goes. This planet wont’ be here forever. We must be ready to move when the time comes. Maybe we have a million years… maybe only 20. The sooner we start working on being able to leave our world, and/or communicate with others in our universe, the greater will be our chances of surviving the eventual and inevitable end of our world and solar system.

If so, what information should we send?

Simple and basic things like mathematics; at least to start with. If communication is ever establishe
