Personal background
Hi

I am an environmental consultant/scientist living in Auckland New Zealand.
I'm in my 40's, spend most of my time involved one way or another engrossed in work or writing. I have two teenage daughters. I love living in New Zealand. My main interests are examining and assessing what happens to contaminants that are put into our environment and working on environmental projects that have benefit to our society - I'm able to do that most of the time. I also love food and wine; something I sometimes indulge a bit more than I should. New Zealand is a fairly unique country - in many respects - environmentally and socially - If you dont believe me have a look at some of the material you can find on the net about the country. Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have been running Seti @ home since 1998 and now have a small cluster of about 12 computers running Seti. It doesnt seem too long ago that single units were being processed in 20-30 hours. Now about half of the PCs I have are P4s or Athlon XPs running units in 3-5 hours. Best times on high angle units run at about 2 hr 50 mins. Seti at Home is an amazing example of practical science - previously a topic seen as geeky to most people.

Trying to find out about the nature of the universe before we can physically get out there is a natural process. It is impossible to conceive that given the scale of the universe and the progression of evolution on this planet that the universe is devoid of other forms of life either more primitive or more advanced than us. So searching for it is logical. I sometimes consider that its surprising that we havent already identified and made contact (formally) with other intelligent life - that may be my science fiction side emerging and that I am hopeful that it will happen in my lifetime.
