Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ALF exist? Is there extraterrestrial life out there? On that question I can answer without a single doubt in my mind, YES. There are hundreds of thusands of worlds out there capable of sustaining life and to believe we are the only sentient life to exist is to vain to even consider.
When will we discover it? Hopefully, we won't have actual interaction yet for quite some time, but I am convinced we will get some kind of evidence of another intelligence within the next few years. Now, why don't I want to interact with them? Well, as several tv-shows are so fond of pointing out, the Human race is a young race. We are yet to reach mental maturity. We still react impulsively and let our emotions run wild. And the only form of communication we truly grasp is the one of brute naked force.

Now, is that the first impression you wanna give these lifeforms? The image of Homo Sapiens meeting Neanderthal (and earlier) comes easily to mind.

Personally, I run SETI@home to silence all those in doubt and all those in fear. When contact is made, it must be made scientifically with a open mind instead of reaction based on fear and I am very positive that the public can assist in their small way. Not so much for the possibility to find something, but more to show those that doubt us that we are not few, we are "normal" beings and we are growing!
